About 20 miles north of Charleston, on Highway 17, you'll come to an intersection with 15 Mile Landing Road (to the west) and Seewee Road (to the east). This intersection has just about everything anyone would need - a restaurant, a general store (that sells gas), a plant nursery, and a place that fosters local musicians (as well as those traveling through the lowcountry). What else does one need?
So, there is the SEWEE Outpost, a low 'country' store as they describe themselves (that has wonderful country ham biscuits in the morning, clothing for the active outdoorsperson, and a fun collection of toys - plus tons of other stuff). There is Hidden Ponds Nursery, which (for the garden-obsessed) has a large collection of plants (which they propagate and grow on-site) and for those forced to accompany the plant-obsessed, there is about a mile-long nature walk on the property to occupy your time. And I think that just about everyone knows now about Awendaw Green and the wonderful things they are doing to foster musicians in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and beyond - and if you haven't heard about them, you should definitely visit their website.
But in between shopping for fun toys (rubber chicken anyone?), new palm trees or before you head over to Awendaw Green for one of their Wednesday night Barn Jams, you really ought to stop for some lunch or dinner at the SEEWEE Restaurant. My personal preference is the grilled local shrimp or scallops - cooked up 'SEEWEE style'. And the fried okra and eggplant is cooked perfectly - and as for the desserts, if you like banana pudding, peanut butter pie, berry cobblers and the like, then you'll probably be a happy camper.
You can also get a taste of their menu at the Awendaw Green Barn Jams where they have a small kitchen set up and you can purchase something to eat while you enjoy the music. It doesn't get any better than that!

You can't miss the SEEWEE Restaurant sign right along Highway 17.
Mixed berry pie? Bourbon pecan pie? Bread pudding?
There's nothing quite like seeing your beverage options on the shelves when you walk in the door!
You can click on the image above to see a larger (and more readable version) of the front of the SEEWEE Restaurant menu that tells you a bit about the history of the place. The building was a country store in the 1920's, and was opened as a restaurant in 1993.

Years ago there was some uncertainty about exactly where Awendaw WAS. Its official town limits weren't marked, and it evidently was a pretty big rural territory without much physical evidence of town-ness. So someone put up a sign near the fire station or the post office, I can't remember which-- saying "This here is downtown Awendaw." I think the sign stayed up for several years.

Jo, your comment made me laugh - because I've had people ask me where exactly Awendaw was too! I think they just kind of assume it's a nebulous spot along a stretch of H17 (which I guess is pretty much correct). Do you know anybody who has a photo of that sign when it was up? That's sure be fun to post here.
Thanks for your comment!
